Gillian Brookes: My Career as a Female LGV Driver

One of Gist’s award-winning drivers was a guest speaker at the Microlise Transport Conference 2022 last month.

Gillian, based at Gist Hemel, spoke at a skills workshop during the Microlise Transport Conference 2022, discussing the role of an LGV driver from the perspective of a female driver.

A Gist driver for around four years now, Gillian began her driving career at the age of 25. She gained HGV and PSV licenses in 1985 - a time when women drivers were an anomaly. It was very a difficult industry for a woman to build a career at that time.

However, Gillian has overcome any barriers she faced and was named Microlise Driver of the Year 2020, beating more than 225,000 other UK drivers. She was also named winner of the Long Distance category at the awards that year, which features drivers who regularly undertake journeys of more than 60,000 miles per annum.
