Gaining skills for life with apprenticeships

It’s National Apprenticeship Week! And to mark the occasion, we’re raising awareness of the importance of apprenticeships and celebrating some of the colleagues who are developing their careers at Gist.

Jessica O’Sullivan completed a Level 3 Data Technician apprenticeship, supporting her role as Transport Data Analyst at Gist’s head office in Basingstoke.

“There was a lot of support to help through the course, both with the apprenticeship providers and from colleagues,” explains Jessica. “The modules covered have been helpful in my day-to-day work as it has given me the skills to redesign and create reports which have been implemented and help the running of the National Planning Centre.”

Lloyd Morris joined Gist as an apprentice in 2012 and is now General Manager at Gist Thatcham. Lloyd’s is currently undertaking a Senior Leader Apprenticeship - his third apprenticeship since joining Gist.

“I see it as a great opportunity to further develop and it will enable me to go onto my MBA later this year,” Lloyd explains. “I have learnt a lot about business strategies, which are important in the ever-changing market. This links into wider people strategies, change management and financial strategies and this has helped me understand some of the decisions that Gist has made.”

Lloyd has previously completed a Level 2 NHQ in Business Admin and a Level 3 NVQ in Logistics.

“This apprenticeship is helping me be more confident in what I do, and not feel a level of imposter syndrome,” adds Lloyd. “It’s great to connect with different industries and business leaders through this apprenticeship.”

Florin Ghirold, HR Administrator in Enfield, is undertaking a Level 5 HR Consultant/Partner and the CIPD Associate Diploma in People Management.

“I strongly recommend the apprenticeship and advise everyone on not missing on the opportunity to develop themselves, as I took the best decision when I enrolled into the programme,” says Florin. “The apprenticeship helped improve my decision making around our employee’s wellbeing. I feel more confident and not afraid to make a decision and I see positive changes since I have started the apprenticeship.”

Gist offers a selection of apprenticeships to support a career in logistics. For more information, or to apply, visit our career page or email Apprentices@gistworld.com.
