Employees at Gist’s Thatcham site are being encouraged to bring their daughters to work on Thursday, 3rd April to support national “Bring Our Daughters to Work Day” and experience life as a trucker.
Gist, one of the UK’s leading logistics providers, is inviting daughters aged between 10 and 16 to its Thatcham site to learn more about the business and the working role of truck drivers. The girls will be given the chance to ride in trucks around a working site and gain an insight into life as a truck driver. Fran Daley, a female driver based at the Thatcham site, will be on hand to give them advice from her own experience of 16 years in the industry.
Tony Hammond general manager of Gist’s Thatcham site says: “The industry is suffering from a shortage of drivers at the moment and unfortunately girls rarely consider this as a possible career path. We are delighted to be able to make these girls aware of a wider range of career options that are open to them.”
The “Bring Our Daughters to Work” scheme has been running in the UK since 1994 and, more recently, has been overseen by Girlguiding UK. It is a special day which offers girls the opportunities to learn more about the world of work and to experience the wide range of careers open to them. The scheme is backed by the Confederation of British Industry, Commission for Racial Equality and the Department of Trade and Industry, to name but a few.
