Gist pioneers apprentice programme

Gist, one of the UK’s largest logistics providers, is tackling the current shortage of mechanics with an innovative new apprentice programme. The lack of trained mechanics able to maintain vehicles is a real problem for the industry and Gist’s new recruitment strategy is proactively dealing with the issue before it becomes unmanageable.

Six vehicle engineering apprentices have been recruited under the scheme, which started this year, and are training at locations across the company. They will be given on-the-job training whilst at the same time attending day release or block release courses at local colleges. The ultimate aim of the programme is for the apprentices to reach the position of workshop manager.

Gist’s engineering director Sam de Beaux said: “The shortage of drivers within the industry is constantly discussed, but our view is that the skill gap in vehicle engineering and fitting will be even more serious.

“Our aim is to provide these apprentices with the best training possible as this scheme is an important investment in our future as well as theirs. The training programme has been very successful so far and the apprentices are showing real promise – many have management potential that we will help them to fulfil.”

Barry Meachin, 21, an apprentice at the Crewe depot, said, “I jumped at the chance of an apprenticeship immediately. Once I’ve finished the training programme I’ll have both a qualification and a recognised skill that I can use to further my career within the logistics industry.”
