Gist’s warehouse site at Westfield in Glasgow has been officially recognised for its exemplary safety record by the British Safety Council.
Westfield’s National Safety Award places Gist among an elite list of winners from large and small businesses across the UK from the public and private sectors, all of whom have been commended by the Prime Minister for setting challenging health and safety targets.
“We are delighted to receive this recognition from such a respected, independent safety authority,” says Deirdre Duncan, Westfield General Manager. “Safety is of paramount importance to us at Gist – right from the boardroom down to the shopfloor – and we have worked hard to maintain the highest level of safety standards and the lowest level of accidents. This award is a well deserved pat on the back for everyone here.”
All winners must have lower than average accident rates, good safety policies and safety plans and a commitment to health and safety at the highest levels. Westfield, which is one of Gist’s key M&S general merchandising sites, has reduced the rate of site accidents by 20% in the last year. Initiatives such as involving staff at all levels and introducing a Safety Manager of the Month award are highly effective and have contributed to this award.
David Ballard, Director General of the British Safety Council, says: “These awards are a mark of a proven and significant achievement in safety standards. By making safety an important feature of everyday work, practice, Gist is reducing accidents and ill health while improving productivity and profitability.”
