Gist wins top safety award

Supply chain specialist Gist has won a prestigious safety award from the British Safety Council. Only companies with below average accident rates are eligible.

Gist is responsible for managing the supply chains of some of the UK’s biggest high street chains, including Marks & Spencer, New Look, Budgens and Carlsberg UK. It is one of only about 1000 winners from large and small enterprises all over the country in the public and private sectors. They faced a tough test in order to satisfy the independent Awards Panel.

Winners must have lower than average accident rates, good safety policies and safety plans, and commitment to health and safety at the highest board level. They must detail their health and safety officers’ qualifications and provide details of significant advances in health and safety for the year, plus notification of any impending health and safety legal action.

Mr David Ballard, Director General of the British Safety Council, says: “The National Safety Awards highlight organisations that reach top levels of health and safety. They are a mark of a proven and significant achievement in safety standards. By making safety an important feature of everyday work practice, Gist is reducing accidents and ill health while improving productivity and profitability.”

Richard Watson, General Manager at Gist in Crewe, said: “We’re all delighted we’ve won this award. Safety is of prime importance across the whole of Gist and the whole team here at Crewe has worked really hard to make a difference, not just to our performance, but our everyday behaviour.”

Prime Minister Tony Blair sent a message to winners via his office: “I send my congratulations to all of those organisations being presented today with a National Safety Award by the British Safety Council. These awards recognise the crucial success that these organisations and their employees have achieved in their pursuit of excellence in the management of health, safety and environmental matters. I welcome this opportunity to publicly recognise the valuable contribution that the British Safety Council makes in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice”.

Winning companies are invited to attend a banquet in London on May 21st, the biggest event in the safety calendar. Guests will hear a keynote speech from George Brumwell, General Secretary of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians. They will also enjoy a variety of entertainment.
